         Tech Session 1

Members Meeting Porsche of Delaware

We stormed into Newark on a raw, rainy night in January for the first in our series of Tech Sessions at Porsche of Delaware. It was a first for Bob Bloser, as well – his inaugural general members meeting as Club President and Master of Ceremonies. Prior to his opening remarks, we were treated to a pizza-lover’s feast while sporting wide smiles and hardy handshakes among friends we may not have seen since warmer, top-down days of autumn.

As Bob acknowledged the gathering of more than forty enthusiasts, he made a special point to extend our genuine Delaware PCA welcome to several new members in attendance. Since the showroom did not really accommodate our usual initiation ritual of asking new members to stand atop the closest table and tell us about their prideful rides while dancing a jig to our always encouraging applause, we simply accepted their gracious introductions and offered our hardy handshakes as new best friends who share their passion for piloting breakneck stags. Only teasing, of course – about the tabletop pronouncement, certainly not about the hardy welcome … “It’s not just the cars, it’s the people.” Come one, come all; you’re family!

Like always, I found myself among friends with stories to tell. And, like always, I found it too difficult to leave those storytellers to join the rest of the throng as they retired to the service bay with Jack Bachmurski, Service Tech extraordinaire, for lessons under a more recent example of Dr. Porsche’s finest renderings … our theme for this meeting’s event. So, I asked John Kassay to share his observations and thoughts about the rest of the evening’s sights and sounds. He said Jack took the gang to a 2009 911 that was on the rack for a typical annual service and inspection. He explained the benefits of direct injection which began with the 2009 model year. Jack used a cut-away cylinder head to demonstrate — better throttle response, more power, and improved fuel efficiency. Jack and Dave Brobst, Service Manager, reminded everyone about the importance of having the maintenance record manual officially stamped each time your car is in for service to document the work performed. Also, Jack said he and Tom DiCesare, our other good friend and Master Service Tech at PofDE, like to offer recommendations and other specific notes to the pages of your car(s)’s manual. Jack expertly fielded several pressing questions and finished with the suggestion that we regularly exercise our cars to avoid problems common to garage queens. As we often hear from the experts, these cars are meant to be driven … “bad stuff can happen when they are left to sit.” So, as Jon Walton wrapped up his Virginia speed trap two-finger salute, Dave Morrell expressed his fascination with how completely covered is the underside of these cars; the belly pan extends from axle to axle. It can skip like a stone across the surface of a pond if you pilot it into deep enough water … be careful! But, on a dry road, that contributes to the magic that helps stick these special rides down like flying lizards!

Since we exceeded Alex Witham’s, PofDE Sales Manager, anticipated attendance by 50% on a dreary, mid-week evening in January, it would appear that this month’s general member meeting and Bob’s first under his guidance, was a big success! We certainly appreciate the tireless efforts of Sean Johnson, General Manager, and his team at Porsche of Delaware for their hospitality and good cheer. And, we are pleased that so many braved the elements to venture out for technical advice and a peek at the new line on the showroom floor. So, the next time you’re in, please extend a thankful hand to the folks at Porsche of Delaware and let them all know how much we appreciate their support for club activities throughout the year!

As we are making more of a concerted effort this year to provide you with a totally plausible excuse (for wives/husbands) to join your Porsche friends for dinner one Wednesday each  month, February’s general members meeting will assemble at Mid-Atlantic Grand Prix for an evening of karting, www.MidAtlanticGrandPrix.com. We will briefly share pertinent announcements concerning upcoming activities while you enjoy complimentary picnic fare. Then, it’s off to the races! Bring the whole family for an entertaining and interactive evening of fast-paced fun!

Keep the shiny side up! And, let’s roll !
