Wilmington & Western Railroad
How cool was it to ride the W&W railroad this week! Originally chartered in1867 to move goods from the mills along the Red Clay Creek to the Port of Wilmington, the railroad continues to this day thanks to the hard work of many volunteers and visionaries. The Delaware Club booked one of the beautifully decorated cars just for our members and guests. The railroad’s Holiday Lights Express features old-time rail cars decorated for the season and a beautiful ride through the Red Clay Creek valley. The trains run ten miles between Greenbank and Hockessin.
As is tradition, many homeowners along the route do a wonderful job of decorating their yards for the enjoyment of the train passengers. What a treat to see so many beautiful lights and Christmas regalia. Here is wonderful history of the railroad
Special thanks to club president, Lisa Hatfield, for arranging the event and managing all of the sign-ups, etc. Another special thanks to long-time club member and Wilm. & Western volunteer, Ak Kissell, for accompanying us on the event as our official conductor. Much appreciated, AK.
The Wilmington and Western Railroad runs regular trips seasonally but is also available for special occasions. More information is available here.
